Fabric banners

We can still see those long, thin banners in Japan, often for advertisements.
There are lots of them for Sumo plays and also Kabuki theatres or Rakugo (comedy) theatres.

On the reference book shelf, there were some Hiroshige's books, my favorite wood print maker.

These are the scenes for some celebration for Shrines. Lettering are unique, too but the style is quite interesting.

This is the on-going festival in Noto, Ishikawa.  What a scale! They look super cool.

I didn't do such a scale but many different ones. We should have made millions in this film - the painters always seems busy painting them, ant the drapes always on sewing machine to making them.

They were for Kira's fortress and each one says names of their team - marksmen, snipers, lancers...  Painted on silk.
And they are on sets.
You can see Kira's purple octopus banners and they look much stronger than my white ones. Its was narrow but I could have made these letters thicker to be more stand out.
( there are some writings on these barrels underneath, too)

And this one again for Kira's grave yard as I mentioned before...
Originally they were just black writing on white silk (says 南無釈迦牟尼仏) because they need to look solemn at grave yard.

But the Art Director decided in two seconds when he saw these on set

‘Why are they white? They should be purple as well if they're Kira's.’

We've only got a few hours before the shooting starts.
The drapers dyed them in purple, painter painted a black bits and I wrote letters in silver.

His decision was right I can say so now - because they look much more important!
